Cotton Dish Sponges

Alright folks, here's my go at writing up a pattern. If any of you out there in bloggerland find anything that doesn't seem right, or have no idea what i'm talking about (it happens, believe me), please let me know.

Crochet Dish Sponge
approx. 3" x 4"
(these will get slightly wider when wet, if you find the width too large for you, simply reduce the number of rounds by one)

Materials
Size H (US 8) Crochet Hook
about 1/2 oz. worsted weight kitchen cotton (i used Sugar n Cream)

Abbreviations
ch - chain
hdc - half double crochet
rd - round
rem - remaining
sc - single crochet
sl st - slip stitch
sts - stitches
tbl - through the back loop
tfl - through the front loop

Pattern
ch 18
sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each rem ch across, turn (17 sc)

Rd 1 - ch 2, hdc tfl of each sc across, turn work and continue back around placing a hdc in each of the rem loops on other side of the same sc sts you just completed placing hdc tfl in, sl st in first hdc to join rd (34 hdc)

Rd 2-6 - ch 2, hdc tbl of each hdc around, sl st in first hdc to join rd (reduce number of rounds here to shrink width)

Create Row - ch 1, sc tbl of both thicknesses of hdc sts, turn work

Last Row - sl st in each sc across, fasten off.

Weave in ends, pulling tails into the middle of dish sponge for easy "hiding". :)

i make colorful ones for my dishes, and make white ones for housecleaning. This way i am sure to keep them separate, and the white ones can be used with cleaning products that contain bleach (they also can be cleaned thoroughly with HOT water).

wash and dry these babies with your dish rags and cleaning rags, but be aware that they take a little extra time to dry due to their thick nature. i let mine hang out on top of the dryer for a bit before stashing them under my sink.

I also sell these in my etsy shop for those who are less than crochet-inclined. ;-) www.gherkinsbucket.etsy.com.

copyright Krysten L. 2007. don't steal my stuff y'all. it's for personal use only, to bring joy to others; give credit where credit is due. Selling the finished product for charity uses is OK.

Thanks so much for this pattern. I just made one up and tried it with my Dawn Direct Foam and it works great! Now I know what to do with all those ends of the skeins. I'll also be adding one to the kitchen towel and dish cloth I'm giving as a wedding gift in two weeks.

OK, I am now seriously addicted to making these. I found my bag of partial skeins and I have to see how each color looks made up. So easy to make and I just love useful things. I've been passing them out to everyone. Bet you never thought these'd be such a big deal to people. Thanks again for sharing the pattern!!!!

I just found these and they look like a great pattern, but I'm rather new to crochet (6 months) and i understand most of the pattern but i have a couple of questions.I would like to email you about but can't find an email link for you.
What i don't understand is for starters in rd2-6 you say "reduce number of rounds here to shrink width" i'm not sure what that means.I also don't know what you mean by "create row"
I hope you can clarify these things for me as i would love to make this pattern. Thanks dawn

hi dawn, i'd be happy to clarify!

rd2-6: my side comment on that was just to let everyone know that if they add rounds to this section, so say do 8 rounds instead of 4, then the width of the sponge will be that much wider....so it was just a note for how to customize the pattern to your needs. :)

and creating the row is just making the round into a row by crocheting through both "layers" of the sponge, essentially closing the pocket. i'm just clarifying that you wont be working around in rounds anymore but back and forth in rows. :)

i hope that helps!!

I have not crochet for years and i realy want to make this. I don’t understand:

Rd1 rem loops on other side of the same sc sts you just completed placing hdc tfl in,

I can’t seem to visualize which loops I am to us. Do you have a work in process picture?

I am very excited to try this out. I love working with cotton yarn (I use Peaches 'n Cream mostly) & am always on the lookout for new patterns.

It looks easy to make & I thank you for putting this out!!

Thanks so much for this! I've already made half a dozen for quick tuck-in or add-on gifts, and I use the only one I kept for myself, constantly. I gotta make ME a few more! I love that they can be bleached, that they reach into corners, that they scrub without scratching, and that the size is right.
