Crochet Biffer "Shrug"

Why can't your Swiffer accessorize too?

I came up with a hdc and front/back post hdc combo pattern so that the cover had ridges to catch bigger crumbs. what i realized later, was that i wished the ridges appeared on BOTH sides, so i could get even more use out it. I always used both sides of my purchased Swiffer cloths, why should a reusable, home-made one be any different? So here is my take on a crochet version.

Biffer Shrug

Materials
Size H (US 8) crochet hook
1 3/4 oz worsted weight kitchen cotton (i used Sugar n Cream)

Abbreviations
bpdc - back post double crochet
ch - chain
dc - double crochet
fpdc - front post double crochet
hdc - half double crochet
hdc dec - half double crochet decrease
rem - remaining
sl st - slip stitch

Pattern
ch 18

Row 1 - hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in each rem ch across, turn

Rows 2-7 - ch 2, hdc in each hdc across, turn (16 hdc)

Row 8 - ch 2, 2 dc in first hdc, 1 dc in each hdc across until last hdc, 2 dc in last hdc, turn (18 dc)

Rows 9-30 - ch 2, dc in first dc, alternate fpdc and bpdc across until last dc, 1 dc in last dc, turn

Row 31 - ch 2, hdc dec over first two dc, hdc across until last 2 dc, hdc dec over last 2 dc, turn (16 hdc)

Rows 32-37 - ch 2, hdc in each hdc across, turn

Fasten off. Fold each hdc section over onto the dc section and sl st both thicknesses together in order to make the pockets on each side that hold the "shrug" onto the Swiffer.

Slip it onto your Swiffer and be proud of yourself! When one side is dirty, flip the pockets inside-out and use what was the back to keep going! The alternating front and back post stitches ensure that there are ridges on both sides.

Love this. I started it last night. My edges look horrid. That is what I get for only knitting for the last three years. Good thing I have plenty of cotton laying around. I'll be making these for gifts to be sure.

I missed the class. I hope you give another for us poor gals that can't make it on Saturday.

myridian - finish that sweater and we'll work on it!

jamie - oh like you didn't already know i was like this, haha!

iac - make one! make one!

photogmichelle - knit edges do tend to be a little less "finished" looking, i think. i cant remember what that knit pattern says to do at the edges, but maybe if you slip all the first stitches on each row, and knit all the last stiches on each row. that usually leaves you with nicer edges. ooooor, you could learn to crochet! ;-)

hey Pat! good to see you around again! you wouldnt by any chance have any experience in the yarn world, would ya??

trismm - i'm always willing to give some crochet tips and helps any day i'm there! :)

This is GREAT!
My 6 year old son loves to take my swiffer and do the floors (whether they need it or not). I have been just putting paper towels on the bottom as the refills get expensive! This will be great just to toss these in the wash or even just to give them a soak in the sink!
THANK YOU!THANK YOU!THANK YOU!

I did it! Yay!

Hey, thanks for sharing. I'm going to be making one of these up for my mum. Have you used it yet? How long do they last? Does it do what you thought it would? (pick up the big stuff)
((hugs))

Thank you so much, this will help me and my pets.

I LOVE this idea. I can't wait to try it so I can use it after I use up all the refills I've "stashed." :-D

I hope you don't mind if I convert the center rows to sc. I don't like the idea of all my dirt ruining my Swiffer base. (I'm cheap on my fixed income).

Since the cotton stretches or "gives" so well, I'm hoping that I can turn it around to use the other side.

Great design!!

I am going to make one or two of these!! I HATE buying the refills. They are so expensive and with four cats I use it often. Thanks!
